Ballet Wichita Taps High-Profile New Yorkers for ‘Nutcracker’

Get ready, ballerinas of Wichita – auditions for Ballet Wichita’s “Nutcracker” are this weekend.

And for this year’s production, two high-profile New Yorkers will produce and direct the show.

Karen Brown, who was a principal ballerina for the Dance Theatre of Harlem from 1973 to 1995, is guest artistic director. Brown most recently was executive director of Garth Fagan Dance, the company that choreographed “The Lion King” on Broadway.

Sean McLeod is the guest director and choreographer of this production. McLeod is founder of Reaching for Higher Ground Consulting and is Executive Producer of the Harriet Tubman Freedom Music Festival, the New York Dance Festival and the Global Dance Initiative.

Earlier this year, the show’s longtime artistic director, Jill Landrith, retired from Ballet Wichita, although she still teaches dance classes.

Auditions for “The Nutcracker” start at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wichita State University’s Heskett Center, 1845 Fairmount, and callbacks will continue Sunday.

Brown and McLeod will also teach a master class, open to all dancers ages 6 and older, on Friday. Registration for the class, which runs from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Heskett Center, starts at 5:30 p.m.
