FABRIC:  UNLESS SPECIFFICALLY NOTED GET WOVEN NOT KNIT FABRIC AND YARDAGE IS BASED ON 44″ WIDE FABRIC.

ZIPPER POUCH  –basic pouch with a single zipper.  This is the perfect next class after making a pillow for novice students.

FABRIC:  1/2 yard of cotton fabric OR grab a couple of colorful and coordinating fat quarters.  You will want outer fabric and fabric for lining.

Thread:  coordinating thread

Zipper:  nylon zipper 7″ to 9″ wide.  Coordinate with your fabric you have chosen.  We can probably squeeze more than one bag out of the 2 fat quarters so get a couple of zippers and we will make bags of different sizes with left over fabric.  I’m planning on making a bunch of these as gifts and found them at a great price on Amazon.  Here’s the link for the 9″ I bought.  Amazon.com: YAKA 60pcs 9 Inch Nylon Coil Zippers Sewing Zippers for Tailor Sewing Crafts (20 Color)

Pick whatever width you want the top of your pouch to be.  If you are making a pencil pouch, you are going to want a longer zipper, probably 12″ at least.

Honestly, once you do the first one, you will want to make a bunch more.

ZIPPER POUCH 2.0.

We can expand your skills doing some piecing, fusible batting and adding a wrist handle, a 2nd zipper.

CLOTH NAPKINS  THIS IS GREAT PROJECT TO CONCENTRATE ON USING A SERGER

Fabric: 2 yards each of 2 different cotton or cotton blend fabric. We will be making double-sided napkins and roll hemming them on the serger. I will provide serger thread in basic black or white. If you want something beyond that then you will need to get 3 serger cones of whatever color you are wanting to edge your napkins in. Or 3 spools of thread in your chosen color.

PRE-WASH YOUR FABRIC PLEASSE

UNPAPER TOWELS  ANOTHER GREAT PROJECT FOR PRACTICING ON THE SERGER

Fabric:  THERE ARE 2 DIFFERENT TYPES OF FABRICS USED ON THIS PROJECT:

1 to 1 1⁄2 yards of cotton flannel fabric. I recommend a colorful bright print. The first ones I made for my own use of pastel colors got dirty and grungy pretty quick. Think bright.

For the “towel” side, I recommend you go buy a big bath towel at Dollar General that coordinates with your flannel fabric. Or bring an old towel from home and we will use. You can buy terry cloth from Joann’s but I find it’s rather expensive and they seldom have it on hand. I’ve had to order it on-line and have it shipped. Really an old beach towel is GREAT for this.  Another option is to buy a stack of washcloths from like Dollar General.  I used white wash cloths from Dollar General for my initial set and they got dingy pretty quick but work great for ‘yucky’ cleaning projects.  My next set I bought a stack of grey washcloths, and they have worked just fabulous for this.

We will be sewing these on a serger and I will provide white or black thread. If you wanting a color beyond that, you will need to buy 4 serger cones. Or 4 spools of thread to use on the serger.

FABRIC GIFT BAGS  These are a great alternative to wrapping paper for holiday and birthday gifts

Ribbon:  1/2″ or less wide ribbon that coordinates with your fabric to use as ties on your gift bags.  I would recommend several options

WINE GIFT BAGS  These are lightly padded bags you can use to fit wine or alcohol for gifting.

WRAP AROUND DANCE SKIRT  THESE ARE THE WRAP SKIRTS BALLET DANCER WEAR AT CLASS

Fabric:  2 yards chiffon.   If you go to Joann’s please stick to chiffon. Things like organza are too stiff for this skirt.  The 2 yards is based on 44″ wide fabric.

Thread:  One spool of matching thread to use with the regular machine to attach your ribbon waistband to your skirt.

We will be serging the bottom of the skirt and a serger uses 3 or 4 cones of thread depending on the stitch you are making. We are going to roll hem these and that uses 3 cones of thread. I will provide white or black cones so if you want another color for the bottom of your skirt, than you need to get 3 spools or mini-cones of coordinating thread for your skirt.

Ribbon:  One spool of coordinating or matching gross grain ribbon 5/8” to 3/8” wide. 1⁄4” is really too narrow for beginners to sew on.  Grossgrain ribbon has little tiny ridges in it.  It will wrap around your waist like 3 times so a full spool is the best way to go.

PAJAMA PANTS OR SHORTS  BRING A PAIR OF SLEEP PANTS OR SHORTS TO CLASS AND WE WILL TRACE THEM TO USE AS A PATTERN

Kids: if making shorts then 1” yard of cotton or flannel will be enough. Please wash in warm water and dry on normal before class. If your child is a teenager, than I recommend you get 1 1⁄2 to 2 yards of fabric.

If making sleep pants then 2 yards. It child is actually a teenager or wearing larger sizes (above child’s size 10) than 2 1⁄2 to 3 yards is recommended. AGAIN PLEASE PRE-WASH BEFORE CLASS.

Adult shorts: 2 yards of cotton or flannel. Please wash in warm water and dry normal before class. Cotton and flannel will shrink!

Adult Sleep Pants: 3 yards of cotton or flannel. If need to make Xlarge size or above, than I recommend 4 yards of fabric. AGAIN PLEASE PRE-WASH BEFORE CLASS.

Elastic: 1 1⁄2 to 2 yards of 3/4” wide elastic. I recommend you look for NON roll elastic.

Thread to match your fabric.
